Degrees and Certifications:

Ms. Portia Johnson

I am a Vernon native, but only attended Lamar County Elementary & High School when my family’s military lifestyle landed me here during my dad’s deployments  for short periods. After graduation from Jefferson City High School in Missouri, I attended one year at Lincoln University there, then attended classes from the University of Maryland-European Div. while in Germany. Finally I enrolled at The University of Alabama to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations/Communication.

Upon graduation, I settled in Vernon where I worked in Sales/Marketing for Omni International, and as an Admin Assistant for the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Completion of requirements to achieve my teaching certification from Mississippi University for Women led me to teach junior high English in Aberdeen, Mississippi, and Berry, Alabama, during which time I earned my Master’s in Education from the University of Phoenix.

In 2007, I became certified in Business Education, allowing me to finally become part of the faculty of Lamar County High where I thoroughly enjoy sharing my experiences and knowledge with our students in both the Business Education and English Departments as well as mentoring them in special clubs and activities.

I have one son, John Ross Johnson, who is a graduate of LCHS, and now also teaches English in the Lamar County District.  Sometimes we wear other than the Black and Gold, but we are BULLDOGS!
